Imagine waking up to discover that all the trees and lamp poles in town had been covered in jumpers. Well this is exactly what happened to residents in a New Jersey shore town.

The West Cape May resident has been dubbed the Midnight Knitter and so far his or her identity has remained a mystery. Under the cover of darkness the Midnight Knitter has covered tree branches and lamp posts with little sweaters.

Residents have been in two minds about the jumpers; while they are enthralled by the rainbow of colours that have popped up they also acknowledge that the mystery knitter shouldn’t really be doing this.

“We don’t know who it is,” Mayor Pam Kaithern told The Press of Atlantic City. “Technically they shouldn’t be doing it. The police are asking about it, but its fun and it’s a mystery.”

Another resident Susan Longacre has said “I think it’s wonderful,” as she walks through Wilbraham Park, where several tree branches and lamp posts have been give jumpers.

However some local residents such as Jamie Smith are indifferent. “It doesn’t bother me. It’s better than somebody spray painting all over the place.”

So far no one has come forward claiming to be the Midnight Knitter.
